Unit 850, Colchester Business Park
In February 2000, Brown Roofing slated unit 850 using Cembrit Blunn (now known as Cembrit) slates. In June 2000 the slates started to lift and curl. Cembrit Blunns (now known as Cembrit) advice initially was to just re-fix rivets. This was done but the slates continued to lift. It was then suggested it was a ventilation problem. Eave ventilation was already in place but ridge ventilation was introduced. This roof was an identical design to others on the Park which were performing well with Cembrit Jutland slates made in Denmark. There was no ventilation in these roofs. Even with the introduction of ventilation the slates continued to distort.
By January 2004 the roof had been repaired on eight separate occasions and Cembrit Blunn (now known as Cembrit) eventually agreed to re-roof with new Jutland slates (made in Czech Republic) at their cost. Re-roofing was carried out in August 2004 with stronger CZ rivets but by July 2007 the slates are failing again (see photo gallery). The significance of this is that Cembrit Blunn (now known as Cembrit) have maintained from the beginning of this dispute, their slates wouldn't lift with the superior strength, so called, super-rivet.
