Hot News graphic linkThis website has been produced as a warning to all Roofing Contractors who may find themselves embroiled in a battle with Cembrit Blunn (now known as Cembrit) over the quality of their product.

For example are you aware that:

In the contractual chain you may be liable for the quality of the slate or tile you install even if specified by others.

The warranty offered by Cembrit Blunn (now known as Cembrit) is only for the re-supply of the slate. Labour and scaffold costs could well be your responsibility.

You may struggle to get any support from the NFRC as Cembrit Blunn (now known as Cembrit) are associate members.

The BBA granted the Cembrit (now known as Cembrit) Zeeland Slate a Certificate without testing the product. It was awarded on the grounds it was similar to the Newland. The Zeeland however is riven surfaced not smooth.

gallery buttonOur own story dates back to 2003 when the Zeeland Slates laid on a project at Aberfeldy, East London for Countryside started to show defects after only two years. We subsequently identified similar problems with Zeeland Slates at another development in Greenhithe, Kent for Crest Nicholson.

The nature of the defect caused the slate to curl and lift clear of the tail disc rivet. This defect was identified by the Stanger Material Science Laboratory of St Albans as being caused by inconsistent coating to the back of the slate which had allowed water absorption and caused the distortion. This was the same conclusion arrived at by Mr Justice Kitchin in the High Court in February 2007, when he stated in his Judgment that “Zeeland Slates installed at Aberfeldy and Greenhithe which have lifted or partially lifted were not of satisfactory quality”.
